Well, I've never left it this long between posts, so sorry about that! We've had a busy old time at KVC and NZ in general. The Christchurch earthquake left us all reeling - lots of family and friends of our class affected but thankfully not badly injured or killed. School held a mufti day to raise funds to help, and KVC also served as a depot for people to drop off goods for Christchurch. KVC sent up a van to collect some international students who needed homes, and they have been well taken care of here.
The latest disaster in Japan has also been a big event. We had a visitor, Jonathon, with us from Japan for a week in February and he is meant to be joining us fulltime sometime in April. You'll be pleased to know that contact has been made with Jonathon's family and that they are okay.
The '1000K Challenge' and school Cross-Country have also taken place in the last couple of weeks. Money and sponsor cards from the '1000K Challenge' are due in asap please. ALL cards must be returned as they are official documents. Boys from 8FL took out 1st and 3rd in the Year 8 section of the Cross-Country - well done, Nathan C and Eli!
We have nearly completed our Social Studies topic on 'Explorers', including independent projects from all the students, which look really good and involved a lot of new learning for them. Our next main English topic until the end of term is a big unit on writing and reading poetry. We went for a nature walk around our lovely grounds on Thursday and collected some great leaves in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours, which we then used to write some short poems - we'll put a few online!
We are also joined for the next two weeks by a young man from Thailand called Au. He will take part in all the classes and activities the rest of us do - including the Year 7&8 dance next Tuesday night if he wants to go!
Meanwhile, teachers are working on the first round of report for parents, followed by interviews in the last week of term. This will be a good chance to see how things are going and discuss how we can prepare them really well for 'high school' next year.
